the “ME” post

My name is Tabatha Marin (but everyone calls me “Taby”), and I am a freshman at the University of British Columbia.

I have a very diverse background as I am half Mexican (dad’s side) and half Chinese (mom’s side); however, I was born in the US (California), lived in Mexico till I was 7, moved to Shanghai till I was 13, stayed in Singapore for 3 years and now… Vancouver. Growing up mostly in Asia and having the fortunate opportunity to travel and experience different customs, culture, traditions and food, I was able to understand Asian ways and mannerisms better than anything else, thus why I decided to take Latin American studies.

Although I plan to major in Psychology with the hopes of going into special education, I decided to take this course to truly understand myself better. As I am Mexican, I realized that my knowledge of Mexico, or in fact all of ‘Latin America’ as a whole, was limited as I truly don’t remember much about being in Mexico and seldomly travel back (the crappy economy makes it hard). I believe that perhaps by taking this course, I will be able to better understand and learn more about my other non-Asiatic side and feel more knowledgable about a whole different category of customs, cultures, traditions and culinary delicacies.

This blog, while being a requirement for LAST100, I want to use as a study device for myself. In addition to having weekly reflections of the given chapters, I will be posting my class and reading notes, study guides, and other findings that I consider relevant (for myself and perhaps others) to the topic at hand. (In a way, it’s really to encourage me to be more engaged in this course and stay on top of my work).
